Gmail’s New Look and How it Affects your Emails

Technology is an important part of my real estate investing business.  It helps me stay organized, efficient and allows me to communicate with my virtual assistants.  I’ll share information on this blog about the technology that I’m using in my business and will try to keep you updated with changes/updates to any common applications.

If you use Gmail as your email client, then I’m sure you’ve seen the changes Google has made to your inbox.  Google’s intention is to only deliver emails to your inbox that they believe is important to you.  They do a pretty good job at this, however, if you want to stay up-to-date on blogs, such as The Boston Investor, or are waiting for a receipt from an online purchase, these emails are most likely being routed to the Promotions tab.  Likewise, email notifications from Twitter and Facebook, are routed to the Social tab.  This is important to know because when you view your inbox, the unread emails in your Social or Promotions tab don’t affect the number of unread emails that Google displays on the left sidebar and at the top of the Gmail internet tab (see image below).  And if you’re not familiar with the Social or Promotions tabs, you could miss emails that you are waiting for.

Google move to Email #1

Luckily, Gmail makes it relatively painless to ensure the emails you want are delivered to your inbox instead of the Social or Promotions tab.  Here are the instructions:

Step 1 – Click on the Promotions tab.  Left click and drag the email that you want up to the Primary tab.  When you drag the email over the Primary title, you’ll get a message like the one shown in the image below.

Google move to Email #2

Step 2 – Next, Google will ask if you want future emails from the sender to go directly to your inbox.  Click Yes.  Also, notice that my unread messages on the left sidebar and at the top of the Gmail internet tab increased by 1 message.

Google move to Email #3

That’s it, you’re done.  Now you can be sure all your important emails are delivered to your inbox instead of the Social or Promotions tab. You can learn more about the new Gmail inbox here.
